When it comes to reading, iPad is a game changer. I can’t say that about iBooks/iBookstore and I just don’t share all the excitement about Apple’s e-book platform.

I understand, Apple gave a green light to digital books and that’s a big thing. I understand the beauty of iBooks. It’s definitely the most advanced way on earth to make an e-book look like a paper one (but I can’t even say it’s the sexiest – Kobo’s demo looks cooler).

What is iBookstore? It’s a medium-sized e-bookstore, available only in US, which doesn’t even have a website. What’s more, it’s not even Apple’s biggest bookstore. There are more than 100 thousand book applications in AppStore, most of them are books-as-apps.

iPad will be a great e-reader not because of iBookstore. At least for now. With 60 thousand books plus extra 30k from Project Gutenberg (experimental ePub), Apple’s e-book shop is just another alternative. Surely it’ll grow fast, but I don’t think iBooks will become iPad’s default e-reading application. Why?

There are many better options. Stanza with more than 100 thousand titles is already a first choice e-reading app for iPhone OS users. Even without an iPad optimization, it holds thousands of personal libraries. People will stick to it, if they are not forced to change (f.e. when the app will be removed from AppStore).

We’ve got Kindle with more than 450 thousand books, available worldwide. There is Kobo, there is Barnes&Noble.

Too many people tend to forget that the most comprehensive source of books on iPad will be Safari. Previewing web pages will become simple, probably no mobilizing services will be needed. That means all online literature will be easily accessible on iPad. A couple of million books at Google Books – and Google Editions will join the game in the coming weeks. More than 10 million books at Scribd. The service is using flash, but you can always download a book or use a send-to-mobile option.

The number of choices to read books on iPad is unlimited. Or not limited to 60 thousand. Times when everything was about sticking to one bookstore are gone forever. Now it’s not even about sticking to one format (like ePub), but one device. People will not have any problem in having many bookshelves as long as those bookshelves are standing in one device.

"Why all the excitement about iBookstore?" is a post from Password Incorrect Blog.

TidyRead is a fantastic service, which converts web pages into fast-loading, minimalist yet eye-pleasing versions, so that you can read them on your iPhone, Android or any other smartphone with a browser.

How it works? You paste an url address of a page, click “Read” button and in a moment you’ll have it mobilized. The service is using special algorithms, which extract only the main headline, text, images and videos, while removing everything else (like a sidebar, footer, widgets or ads). As a result the page you mobilized with TidyRead has a real e-book feel.

More importantly, while classic mobilizing services like Mippin or Mofuse can use only RSS feeds, TidyRead turns any web content into a mobile friendly format. I’ve checked no-RSS websites as well as forums and it worked. Surely, there are pages written in such a way, that their content just can’t be properly shown through any code simplifying script, but that’s the problem most of web mobilizing tools can encounter.

You will say “hey, Google Mobilizer does this job already”. Yes, it does… the basics. It simplifies the page to the ugly core, the pictures are too downsized, the font is ultra small and there is no way to personalize it ( = make it bigger).

Google mobilized pages are optimized for any cellphone, not only touchscreens, so the devices with the bigger screen show everything small. Now the thing is that it is big touchscreen users to be more eager to read on a phone than those with small screens.

MakeUseOf has a good review of the service, so I’ll focus only on features, which make TidyRead a really exceptional proposal for mobile web users.

Killer features

:. Personalization

This is smartly done. Not too complicated, not too basic. Just the right amount of options to manage from a mobile phone (yes, TidyRead can be managed from both desktop and mobile browser). A list of options includes: display style (f.e. novel, e-book, newspaper), font size, text alignment and font family. I’ve chosen my favourite screen font. It’s Georgia and it does a tremendous job in making on-screen reading a real pleasure.

:. Bookmarklet

This is such a simple tool and saves so much time. Just drag this bookmarklet to your toolbar and when you’re at the page which you want to mobilize, just do it in one click. You need another click (“Save to reading list” button) and the page is saved for later reading.

Bookmarklet is directing you to a TidyRead url address, so this is at the same time your shortcut to mobile friendly reading list.

:. Save

Yes. Saving pages into a personal reading list is the most useful feature of TidyRead. This is, in my opinion, number one factor to boost TidyRead’s popularity among mobile readers. What does it mean? You can start making your own catalogue of favourite reads. They can come from many sources, but at TidyRead they’re given one, personalized, familiar look.

I see a lot of potential in TidyRead and I’d like to give you some tips how to maximize the use of it.

:. Share mobilized links

One of the major reasons, why so many links on Twitter are retweeted without reading is that users who access Twitterverse via mobile phones are afraid of opening them. They are afraid to wait ages for a page to load and messy layouts fitting into their phone screens.

Not only Twitter, but also Facebook are heavily populated by mobile readers. Sending them a mobile friendly link makes a lot of sense. With TidyRead it’s super easy. You’re on a page you want to share. Before, you were just using a Bit.ly bookmarklet (or any other url shortener). Now you can first click on a TidyRead bookmarklet (the page is mobilized) and then Bit.ly (the address is shortened). Having one more click makes the content you share accesible by mobile readers.

A tip: give your friends a hint the link is mobilized, for example add “mobile frendly link” at the end of a tweet.

:. Store your mobilized links

Some time ago I listed blog mobilizing tools. TidyRead is a strong next one. If your blog is not mobilized yet and you don’t want to use another plugin for that, you can always pull your home page through TidyRead and save the link. You can also save particular posts to have an immediate access to them from your TidyRead’s reading list.

:. Build a catalog of Scribd books

This is a tip for Scribd lovers. Recently the service has introduced a neat feature. When you’re on a book page (desktop web), you can click the “Mobile” button and Scribd will send to your device a link to the mobile friendly version of a book (two options: SMS or mail). This is a fantastic tool, as there are over 10 million books available via Scribd.

Now, what to do with your favourite links? Scribd can’t store them yet. Looking through old SMS messages can be frustrating. TidyRead does the job. Just paste a Scribd link (it’s shortened by Bit.ly and it works in TidyRead), get the mobile version and store it in your reading list. This way you can collect a pretty long list of the books with a “to-read” status.

:. Collect online fiction

Are you a member of an online writer community? Do you frequently visit pages listing flash fiction, poems or any other kind of online writing? Just mobilize the landing page with TidyRead and all the links within will be mobilized as well.

According to The Economist there are about 5m e-readers in circulation worldwide and double that amount will be sold in 2010. Let’s compare it to touchscreen phones: 184m sold last year, 97% growth is predicted for 2010 (Gartner).

Mobile phone is a music and video player, gaming console or a mobile office, so why not an e-book reader? I’m not talking about one-time chase for a lost symbol. I’m talking about 15-minute read in a found time.

If just a tiny 1% of all new touchscreen users will think of reading a book, it’s 1,84m people who might need some hints. And it’s not only touchscreens which can be used as e-readers.

For all of you interested – check the possibilities, choose your favourite way and enjoy a true mobile reading!

1. Download an app

There are already a couple of multi-platform apps and their number is growing. If you have a phone with Windows Mobile, Palm, Symbian or BlackBerry, you can pick up Mobipocket eBook Reader’s version for your OS. Well known Wattpad reading community is fully mobilized. Its applications are tailored for iPhone/iPod Touch, BlackBerry, Android and there’s an app for java phones as well. Over 1,000 phone models are supported. Other picks are eReader (for all mobile phone systems) and a new Ibis Reader with a built-in catalog of free books from Feedbooks (iPhone and Android).

The biggest number of e-reading apps can be found in iTunes AppStore. As you’ve probably noticed there is a whole category devoted to books. Single books-as-apps also come here, so the category lists more than 100,000 items! The most popular program is Stanza. The catalog of resources includes free titles from Project Gutenberg and Feedbooks, as well as Smashwords, O’Reilly and Fictionwise bookstores… and many more. Other programs worth considering are Kobo, Txtr and Iceberg. A full directory of Books category at AppStore can be found here.

Users of phones with Android OS – don’t hesitate to download Aldiko, a great application with extended functions to help you download, organize and read e-books. Other Android-tailored apps are FBReader and Word-player, check them at Android Market.

There is also another way to find an app right for you – by a bookstore. Amazon and Barnes&Noble customers can download free apps to their phones. Here is Kindle for iPhone and BlackBerry. Barnes&Noble has two apps for iPhone: e-reading and bookstore.

2. Read in a browser

If you’re connected to web via wi-fi network, it’s also possible to read books (and all kinds of literature) online. You probably know mobile version of Google Books (http://books.google.com/m). It’s worth testing, especially that within a couple of weeks Google Editions bookstore will be launched. It’s very probable that some of the current features and interface elements will be used.

Here is another way, actually my favourite one. It’s a very smart and fantastically mastered site – Cellstories. The concept is simple – one great short story per day. Just go to http://www.cellstories.net and if you have such an option in your mobile browser – bookmark the page. It’s a great feeling to have a new story waiting for you every day.

Wattpad fans, even if you don’t have an app, you can always check in at http://m.wattpad.com. Recently also BookGlutton has announced a launch of a mobile version. Go to http://bookglutton.com and if you use a mobile browser, you’ll be redirected to a mobile friendly version of a service.

3. Send a link

This is a clever idea Scribd recently introduced to make their 10 million books and other publications mobile friendly. When you’re on a book page, just click the “Mobile” button and you’ll be asked to choose your device. Phones with Android, iPhone, Windows Mobile, Palm and BlackBerry operating systems are supported by default. Just type in your phone number or an e-mail address and in a moment a message will come with a link to a mobilized version of a book.

Sending mobilized links is generally a very good idea you can apply to every piece of literary text found on the web. You can use Google Mobilizer to do that.

4. Subscribe

Are you using your phone to read RSS news? Do you have RSS reader app installed? Well, just go to DailyLit and add another subscription. Every book will be sent to you in installments. You decide how often and what time you want a new piece to land in your mobile phone.

Actually you can add ANY feed to your mobile RSS reader. Any online fiction community or literary blog can be added and mobilized this way. It’s so easy – you don’t even have to leave a single app. For example you can add a feed for the newest stories arriving at Fictionaut, a community of adventurous readers and writers.

Sure, there are weak pointe here. I’m missing content providers, for example. You can find many more. On the other hand it would be too complicated to put everything into a single map. And we have to realize, that in a couple of months it will be even more complex. Too complex to vizualize it.

"How is the e-book world looking right now?" is a post from Password Incorrect Blog.

Wordle is a fantastic word cloud generator. Its creator, Jonathan Feinberg, has managed to do one great thing: with the selection of fonts, colors and a whole idea how the words are composed, the effect is far beyond the IT world. It already belongs to the world of art.

With Wordle it’s all fun. You enter URL address (f.e. of your blog) and get the cloud of most popular words used. You can also paste a text – and this is actually a possibility Wordle is giving to self-publishing authors. When a writer wants to publish an e-book, with a destination places like Feedbooks, Smashwords, Scribd and alikes, the prepress knowledge is not needed any more. In fact, in most cases the only missing part is just a jpeg picture with a catchy cover. And it doesn’t need to be hi-res CMYK file. One screenshot is enough.

Below there are some tips and examples of how to create it.

Example

Let me start with the example, let’s say children’s book. For a full control, I go to “Advanced” tab and place weighted words or phrases there. I’m inserting the marked title, author, subtitle and titles of the stories. Yes, with Wordle you can easily put the content of your book ON the cover.

Weights:
- Book title:700
- Author’s name:400
- Book’s descriptive subtitle: 300
- Story title:200
- Story title:150
- Story title:100

Layout options:
- Color scheme: BlueSugar – white background is always good for children’s books
- Font: Grilled Cheese BTN – this font is fancy enough
- Layout: Mostly Vertical – as Wordle is delivering word clouds in a horizontal window, choose this option and rotate the picture by 90 degrees later on.

Tips

:. The more words you provide, the better. It could be titles of the stories. It could be tags you usually use to describe the content. It could a title of a book repeated in different sizes. It could be even a pattern of symbols ($, @, *, ®). What you use is up to your imagination. Wordle will do the rest.

:. Instead of playing with advanced options, you can just paste a whole text of your story/novella under “Create” tab. How to make title and author the biggest elements? Just copy and paste them many times, leaving the rest of the text unchanged. Example: one of my stories – Mr Copypaste. Title x40, author x20.

:. Font suggestions:
- non-fiction: Telephoto, Gnuolane Free, Steelfish, League Gothic
- children’s books: Silentina Movie, Loved by the King, Berylium, Grilled Cheese BTN, Mail Ray Stuff
- romance: Sexsmith, Goudy Bookletter 1911, Powell Antique
- science-fiction: Tank Lite, Gunplay

As soon as you start playing with Wordle, I’m sure you get extremely inspired. Wordling a cover for your own book can be as much fun as writing it.
