Kindle for iOS has just been updated to version 2.8 (iTunes link), which complies with Apple’s new in-app purchase rules.

Kindle Store button was removed from home page – it was obvious. I’ve also checked endings of free samples to see what Amazon did with their Buy Now link, which in older versions was switching to book’s Kindle Store page in Safari. Buy Now button is still there (as well as See details for this book in the Kindle Store). However, both links show an alert: “We’re sorry. This operation is not currently supported.”

Apple and Amazon are playing games, which are more and more annoying. Status for today: Apple won’t earn money, Amazon won’t lose money. The only losing part is the reader.

Below you’ll find tips on how to make the most of Kindle on your device – especially after making our lives harder by removing any option to buy a book from within the app. A good thing to do is to change attitude: Kindle on iPad or iPhone is not only about using a Kindle application.

1. Browse Kindle Store in Safari

After 2.8 update it will be reasonable more than ever to browse and buy books right away from Safari browser (without bothering to open Kindle app). Never tried it? Don’t worry. Amazon mobile site looks really well on iPhone/iPod Touch. On the iPad a regular site is displayed, works well, I haven’t noticed any flaws.

2. Add Kindle Store to your Home Screen

Add Kindle Store to your Home Screen

It’s good to add Kindle Store either to a list of bookmarks in Safari or to a Home Screen. On the iPad just go to Amazon site and select Kindle Store from a drop list.

If you’re on the iPhone/iPod Touch, go in Safari directly to this address http://amzn.to/fW2ffk. It’s Kindle Store’s site optimized for small screens – not the same as regular one. You can add it as a bookmark to Home Screen (see picture on the right) and a nice icon will show up.

Find more information about it here.

3. Browse free Kindle books in Safari

In fact, you can use the browser to add books from other sources than Kindle Store. What’s very important, you can add them directly to Kindle for iOS. This is possible since 2.5 update.

What you have to look for is books in mobi format, without DRM. To add a book to Kindle app, tap on a link to a book file, ending with .mobi.

Best sites with free Kindle books, optimized for mobile reading, are: Feedbooks, Project Gutenberg, Smashwords and ManyBooks.

Read more about this topic here.

4. Add books to your Kindle for iOS – not only via iTunes

iTunes is a default way to add content to applications, but happily it’s not the only one. As I’ve written above, you can add books from Safari.

There are two more options available: via e-mail (just send a file to yourself and open it with a native Mail app) and via cloud storage apps like Dropbox.

Find out more about the topic here.

5. Discover books on Twitter and add them instantly to Kindle app

It’s my favorite topic. If you spend a lot of time on Twitter, using Twitter iOS applications, why don’t you try to find Kindle books there? It’s actually pretty easy. Just look for a keyword Kindle or a tag #kindle and you’ll find out a lot of tweets with amzn.to links.

Or if one of Twitter friends is recommending a Kindle book, just tap on a link and you’ll be redirected to mobile Safari (either within Twitter app or outside it) and you’ll decide whether to download a free sample or buy a book.

For more information read this post.

6. Use Kindle application as a free dictionary

Finally, Kindle for iOS can also work as a great dictionary application, so there is no need to buy another one. This is possible thanks to the The New Oxford American Dictionary installed.

You’ll find more information about it here.

* * *

Użytkownicy iPadów mogą mieć powody do zadowolenia.

No właśnie – formaty.

Jest on do pobrania z oficjalnej strony Adobe.

Formaty: ePub, pdf, txt | Zabezpieczenia: brak

Virtualo

Do katalogu włączone są zasoby m.in. wydawnictwa Złote Myśli.

Formaty: ePub, pdf | Zabezpieczenia: pdf – brak, hasło, FileOpen; ePub – Adobe

BezKartek

W ofercie jest około 300 tytułów, m.in. wydawnictw Otwarte, Znak, Czarna Owca i W.A.B.

Formaty: ePub | Zabezpieczenia: n/d

Ibuk

Formaty: ePub | Zabezpieczenia: Adobe

iFormat

Formaty: ePub, pdf | Zabezpieczenia: Adobe

eLib

Sklep z e-książkami i audiobookami oraz czytelnia online. Dział z lekturami szkolnymi.

Formaty: ePub, pdf | Zabezpieczenia: brak

Należałoby jedynie zawęzić poszukiwania do plików ePub.

The end of a free Kindle sample

When a discussion spread across Internet about Apple changing in-app purchase rules, my first reaction was: it’s pointless.

I never bought an ebook by using a “Kindle Store” button on a homepage of a Kindle app. It’s a useless link as Kindle app is the place where you collected all your previous purchase decisions – so why you should need more and, most importantly, what should it be? The problem is a lack of reference. You don’t see any books “recommended for you” or other personalized links as it is happening at the Amazon site.

So what’s it all about? Apple wants a 30% cut from what?

There is one reference. A very effective one. You see it at the end of every free sample you have in your Kindle app: “Buy now” button.

When it comes to Kindle apps the current purchase system is “1-Click-More”. You waste one click in order to switch to Safari. It would be a real “1-Click” if the in-app purchase is enabled. And that’s what Apple counts on.

What will readers do?

They’ll go for a more convenient option (in-app), but on two conditions:

Price is the same – there is no difference between the price of a book bought via Kindle app and via Safari. I don’t know whether it’s possible at all, although we have to bear in mind that Apple wants a cut from an ebook distributor, not a publisher – and this is happening for the first time.

Book is synced – the book purchased within the Kindle app is synced across devices. This is a question to Amazon, because a lack of sync can be their possible move to lower the attractiveness of in-app purchases. It is doable: currently free samples and third-party books are not synced, so why not applying the same rule to “1-Apple-Click” purchases?

From a point of view of a reader the quicker the better. I don’t care about who takes what cut and how. I want to read more books. And this can be done also by saving time devoted to find and buy them.

How much time do you spend on Twitter every day? Do you connect with a service via your mobile phone or a tablet? This article is for you.

Pict. 1: a tweet with a link to Kindle Store

Do you know that you can use Twitter as a quick and convenient way to download Kindle ebooks? You can start reading a book in a couple of clicks from discovering it. There is no need to change a device. You don’t have to save your choice for later in order to access Amazon site from a computer or your Kindle ereader. Isn’t that worth trying?

All what you need to have is a free Kindle application for your mobile device (or devices). Currently Kindle apps are available for those mobile platforms: iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch), Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone 7.

How does it work?

If you discover a tweet with a link to a Kindle Store (like the one in Picture 1), you can click on it and an Amazon site opens – optimized for a screen of your device.

As you see in Picture 2, if you’re logged in to your Amazon account, just after one click you can choose: to buy a book or to download a free sample.

When you select from a list of devices the one you’re currently using, after you click on “Buy Now with 1-Click” or “Try a Sample”, you’ll be directed to a next screen when you can make a next choice: “Continue Shopping” or “Go to Kindle App”.

That’s it, in a couple of seconds you can start reading a book!

Now imagine how much time you’ll need to remember your choice, switch to a browser, go to Amazon site and find a book again.

Pict. 2: 1 click and you are in Kindle Store

The great thing about buying ebooks at Amazon is that a book page is optimized even for small screens of mobile devices and that you have an option to download a free sample. As soon as a sample lands in your Kindle account it’s available for reading from any authorized device.

Tip: You can use Kindle app to download/buy books to your account – and read them afterwards on your Kindle ereader.

How to find books?

Twitter is a fantastic discovery tool. There are a couple of ways you can find an ebook to read. You probably know them, it’s just a question of using relevant factors.

The most convenient tool is Twitter search. Browse for words like “Kindle” and “e-book”. A very precise term which returns only links from Amazon.com is a shortened url – “amzn.to” – which is also a guarantee of a safe purchase. You can also use popular hashtags: #Kindle, #ebook, #ebooks.

Example: If you are looking for a bestselling book, use a word “bestseller” combined with a hashtag #Kindle and a phrase “amzn.to”. Check search results here.

You can also follow Twitter users who share Kindle-related news (for example @ebookfriendly) or Twitter lists with authors who publish their books at Kindle Store (like this one).

Enhanced ebooks are the ones which contain audio and video elements. You can play them right within the book, there is no need to switch applications.

Don’t worry, it doesn’t mean you get a film instead of a book. Multimedia objects are supplementary and their role is to amplify the book’s written message. A good example of such a book is Nixonland (watch a video below).

Enhanced ebooks can be played on mobile devices – tablets or smartphones. Ereaders like Kindle or Nook can’t play video as their electronic ink screens refresh too slowly.

You can buy or download enhanced ebooks from application stores like AppStore for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The books listed there are standalone applications. One of the most famous examples is The Death of Bunny Munro by Nick Cave.

You can also find enhanced ebooks in ebookstores: Kindle and iBookstore. In Kindle Store search for phrase “Kindle Edition with Audio/Video“.

But what to do when you are not lucky enough to be one of Ether authors?

If you are a self-publisher actively using social media to find readers and draw their attention to your books (probably published in an electronic form), this post is for you.

I’d like to share a simple way to make your e-book available for instant purchase by mobile phone users. As you’ll see – it’s very easy.

What to do?

Use Twitter to share links to your books self-published at Kindle Store – with an extra information addressing owners of mobile Kindle applications.

An example of a tweet is shown in screenshot 1. When you tap on a link you’ll be redirected to a mobile browser, like Safari on an iOS device, or a browser working within a Twitter app.

Screenshot 1 - click to enlarge

As you see, just after one click (screenshot 2) the reader can make a purchase decision. What’s more important, the time of actually reading this book on a Kindle app is delayed only by a couple of seconds more. It’s the essence of an instant purchase.

Experts can say: “yeah, but it’s so obvious, that you can buy goods via Amazon’s mobile site.”

The thing is not what expert know, but what readers don’t know. And most of them still don’t know that:

1. Amazon has a mobilized version of its site (even those users who already have Kindle app on their mobile phones – as they never tried actually buying anything yet)

2. 1-Click purchase works on mobile phones

3. It’s extremely fast and convenient – it takes a couple of clicks and a less than 30 seconds from discovering an e-book on Twitter to reading it.

In fact, buying an e-book via Twitter link is faster than doing it via Kindle application, where you’re just redirected to an Amazon site and have to browse for a book.

Why mobile phones?

Screenshot 2 - click to enlarge

1. Mobile web is growing extremely fast, anyone knows it

2. Half of Twitter users is connecting with a service via mobile phones

3. They don’t have to switch devices to complete a purchase – even if they won’t read the e-book on a mobile phone, but on a Kindle device

4. Mobile phone can be a purchase device for owners of Kindles not equipped with 3G

5. Mobile phone users make purchases in application stores of their mobile operating systems. Buying Kindle e-books via Twitter is the similar kind of experience.

Why Amazon?

1. Availability of Kindle apps (iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone 7)

2. Well designed Amazon mobile site – with 1-Click functionality

3. A growing number of Kindle owners and mobile device users with an Amazon account

4. Very important – book syncing. We can assume that this functionality from Amazon will always be a step ahead of competition

5. Right at the beginning, after landing on an book’s page at Amazon, the reader has a choice: to buy a book or to download a free sample

6. Automatic detection of mobile browsers – if you open a link from a mobile phone, a mobile site appears.

Why Twitter?

1. Great discovery&recommendation tool

2. Instant delivery of messages, tweet streams, many users – all that is a great surrounding for instant micro-purchase decisions

3. Amazon link (amzn.to) is a guarantee of a safe purchase. If you use bit.ly shortener it automatically changes to amzn.to when you share a page from Amazon.com.

* * *

Obviously the most important factor is the information contained in a single tweet. The user has to know that the book can be downloaded in a couple of clicks. You have to pick up the owners of customer accounts at Amazon.com – those ones who are right now reading your tweets on their mobile phones.

I’ve tested this method on an iPhone. @narnua came back with the info that it’s also working on Android devices, so probably both BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 users would be also able to buy e-books this way. Please share your experience on this in the comment section.

As you see in an example shown above, this is doable. I sent this tweet yesterday and sold 10 copies of my short stories. Not a bad result for a self-published e-book of a niche genre (I call it “geek fiction”).

There are many ways to address – in a single tweet – mobile users who have access to Kindle e-books:

1. Use “Kindle”, either as a word or a hashtag

2. Use hashtags, not only #kindle, but also #ebook, #ebooks, #mobile

3. Name devices or mobile operating systems: iPhone, iPad, Android, HTC, etc. (also as hashtags).

If you start selling your books this way, I’d love to hear news from you. Please come back and share your thoughts below.

Kindle: prc (mobi)
iBooks: pdf
Stanza: ePub i pdf
Kobo: ePub i pdf

Aby dodać pliki należy przejść do zakładki “Programy”.

Wybierz taki, jaki najbardziej ci odpowiada.

Pierwszy to wpisanie adresu do pliku. Wybierz aplikację, do której chcesz wysłać plik i gotowe. Żeby było prościej, taki adres możesz sobie wysłać mailem z komputera.

Otwieranie za pomocą Safari

Drugi sposób to wykorzystanie mobilnych serwisów e-książkowych, jak np. Feedbooks czy Gutenberg. Witryny wyświetlane są optymalnie do wymiarów małych ekranów, dlatego możesz przeszukiwać je bez żadnego problemu – i bez problemu dodać wybraną książkę.

Możesz wysłać załącznik(i) albo adresy internetowe plików.

This easy little trick should be helpful for every writer who is using Twitter to promote his books. With a recent update of Kindle for iOS (v. 2.5) iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch users can import their own books to the application (here I’ve described how to do it).

Wouldn’t you like tweeple to read your book seconds after they discover it on Twitter? You can use this method to link to a free edition of your how-to guide or a free chapter of your new novel or one of your recent short stories. Make sure you have active links to where you want your reader to continue.

Here is a trick.

Instead of tweeting a link to a book page, tweet a link to a book file.

So if your book is being displayed at the directory like this: http://www.feedbooks.com/book/3127

1. choose a link to a prc/mobi file: http://www.feedbooks.com/book/3127.mobi

2. and tweet it – you can use an url shortener, it also works: http://bit.ly/h35E1O

The link has to be opened in Safari, a screen appears like the one below and a second after you’re on Kindle for iOS.

A tweeted link to a book file can be opened in Kindle for iOS via Safari

When you tweet a link, it’s good to address iOS users as well as a book application. It could look like this:

Yesterday I’ve tweeted my Feedbooks book file and there were almost twice as many downloads as usual.

Trick works also for .ePub files (Stanza, Kobo, Bluefire Reader) and .pdf (iBooks, Stanza, Kobo, Bluefire Reader).

You can call me a mobile freak, before I wrote similar posts a couple of times – for ePubs (like this one). With half of Twitter users tweeting from their mobile phones it’s just very reasonable to find and use the quickest possible way to make your book land in an e-reading application of their choice.

Being read in the book application is not the same as being read on the web. Web is come-and-go. Since you land in Kindle or Kobo you’re there every time the reader wants to read a book. You become a serious choice.

Ta wiadomość powinna ucieszyć właścicieli czytników Kindle i/lub właścicieli urządzeń z iOS (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch). Nowa aktualizacja aplikacji Amazona do czytania e-książek – Kindle for iOS 2.5 – daje użytkownikowi nową, długo wyczekiwaną, bardzo ważną funkcjonalność – wreszcie można dodawać do niej własne książki.

Dotyczy to niezabezpieczonych plików prc/mobi.

2. Safari – albo wpisując ścieżkę do pliku .mobi lub .prc, albo korzystając ze strony mobilnej (np. Feedbooks).
3. Dropbox – jeśli macie na iPhonie/iPadzie aplikację
4. Mail – wysyłając do siebie maila z załącznikiem (zdjęcie 1)

A new 2.5 update of Kindle for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch brings a long-expected import functionality. Now a user can import his non-DRM-ed books directly to the application. It means that you can read books downloaded from Gutenberg, Feedbooks, Smashwords, Internet Archive and any other service, which offers prc (mobi) files.

We were very curious about syncing and the answer is “no”. You can’t sync third-party books across devices. They are not added to your account. So if you download a book to iPhone, you won’t be able to read it on the iPad.

There are four ways to add a book to Kindle app.

1. Via Safari

Simply type a book file’s address in an address bar. If you’re using mobilized services like Feedbooks or Gutenberg, you can find a book and select a mobi file for download.

2. Via mail

If you store a book on you computer, you can send a file to yourself via e-mail and open it in Mail app on your iOS device. When you tap on an attachment, “Open in Kindle” box appears.

3. Via cloud storage service

If you use Dropbox, put a file there, and open it from a Dropbox application on your device.

4. Via iTunes

It’s the least convenient way to add books, as you have to connect to your computer. However you can use it to download many books at once.

A full update notice states:

• Continue downloading books while the app is in the background on iOS 4 devices.
• Access millions of free and out-of-copyright books from Project Gutenberg, Internet Archive, and other online sources. Open supported files from Safari and Mail or use File Sharing in iTunes to transfer files to your Kindle app.
• Improved image zoom
• New book indicator
• Bug fixes

You can download the application from here. Enjoy!
