Google-translated fiction v.1.09
It’s been eight long months since I started a litexperimental project called Google-translated fiction. A simple description is: letting technology, in this case GT Beta, influence the final effect of human’s writing. Major reason I’m running this project is to establish a presence of technological tools in literature in order to eliminate language limitations. Sounds academic, a better explanation would be: an idea to access international audience by a non-English writer.
Below I’m comparing two Google-translations of a single short story. The story in its original Polish version is fixed, but it’s improving at a pace of Google Translate. I must say that recently there has been a substantial development. Probably it happened at the time new languages were added to the service. That’s why a current version of GT-fiction is 1.09, not 1.0009.
I’ll make frequent updates to this 1GT-ed story, as this is showing another dimension of digital literature: it can change (hopefully improve) without the participation of an author. A literary text is no longer ultimate. It’s dynamic, flowing and unpredictable. With my passion to tech-absurd–it’s technology which is improving it or killing it. »»»
The beauty of a blog language mash-up
Some time ago I had a problem: how to manage my two separate WordPress blogs, Polish and English, into one domain. First idea was boringly conventional – split the domain’s content into separate language sub-blogs. But suddenly, on a beautiful morning, a question came and asked me over a cup of coffee – Don’t you think that the idea of a “switch to another language” is getting a bit outdated?
I had to admit that was true. We witness some major changes in how the language is being perceived. This has made me believe, that the idea of a blog’s language mash-up is going to be accepted. »»»

Zrobiłem to, co mi chodziło po głowie od czasu, gdy rzuciłem się na Google-translated fiction.Wczoraj urządziłem Google-translated Day – wykorzystując specjalnie stworzony do tego profil na Twitterze opisałem dzień ze swojego życia, wspomagając się przy tym automatycznym tłumaczem, jakim jest Google Translate Beta.
Bardzo chciałem, żeby potyczka z maszyną, czy raczej skryptem lub ciągiem komend – żeby nabrała intensywności na tyle dużej, bym wyszedł z niej odmieniony doświadczeniem. I tak się właśnie stało. Ale po kolei. »»»
Today is a Google-translated Day
Well, I think this is the right day to do it. I’ll Google-translate every piece of my today’s life and share it through my “I, Google-translated” profile on Twitter.
I woke up in beta mood, what means I don’t know who am I supposed to be in general. This is a perfect match. Beta stage is typical for 99% of Google products, including Google Translate Beta. The last one is my favourite, when it comes to think about technology-related absurd I’m exploring as a writer. When one wants to be a real tech-absurdist, he needs to be involved in what he is writing about. He needs to be a part of an absurd process. Google Translate Beta, with all all those automatically generated language mistakes is a great way to do is.
So my way to explore tech-absurd is not only write about it, but actually – write it (this would be a nice golden thought, if only I knew what I meant).

10 x naj pana od absurdu
Kochamy wszelkiego rodzaju zestawienia, notowania i top-listy. Skoro więc lubimy je czytać, to też lubimy je pisać, prawda.
Bez zbędnego zapętlania na czubku: stworzyłem dwie listy. Każda z nich jest zestawieniem największych absurdów, których byłem żywym i czynnym udziałowcem (drugim było moje jedyne wydawnictwo), jako że absurd, który wyznaję nie ma nic wspólnego z poczuciem bezsilności wobec bezsensu istnienia (J-P. Sartre i naśladowcy). Wręcz przeciwnie, z absurdem walczę bronią krótką, długą lub chemiczną i póki co się nie poddałem, choć czasem jest bardzo ciężko. Jako twórca reprezentuję dynamiczne podejście do absurdu, sam go współtworzę, czasem nawet świadomie.
Pierwsza lista to 5 największych absurdów. Jest to zestawienie pięciu aktywności, które wcale nie wyglądały na absurd, ale w rzeczywistości nim były.

“I, Google-translated” on Twitter
Developing an idea of Google-translated fiction I was thinking of how to find another, deeper meaning of tech-absurd being brought to people’s lives by automatic translation tools. And as I currently run a Twitter absurdist project, it came to my mind, that I should do what I had originally intended – to have a Google-translated life delivered constantly by Twitter updates.
That’s why I started another Twitter profile (sorry Twitterers). The idea is simple as that: I write a tweet in Polish, translate it using Google Translate and send it to Twitterland. The big challenge is to self-experience a touch of tech-absurd in everything I do – or, to be more precise – everything I want to share with other people. I’m pulling my life through a translating script – and this is the whole artistic idea behind “I, Google-translated”.
