8 myths about reading books on a mobile phone
According to Wikipedia there are 4.6 billion mobile phones in the world. It’s a huge number. But people don’t try to read books on them. In this post I’d like to address some of the most popular reasons, which prevent us from doing it.
The screen is too small
This is true – if you still own a 5-year old phone with black&white screen large enough to show in full length only a phone number (if you’re lucky). But things change, and one of the quickest developing ones are mobile phones. More and more people buy smartphones. They have screens large enough to make their producers cry: “hey you can even watch movies on this phone!”.
I’ve heard many times that reading on a mobile phone is a disaster. Now try to watch a movie. It stops every 5 seconds, as it takes a lot of time to download it. THIS is a disaster.
Let’s compare sizes. For a book, you have an A5 format (average paper book) vs a phone screen. For a video, you as a reference we can use a 21″ TV screen. If we can shrink our video world that much, why we can’t do the same with books?
Another comparison. On average the screen of a smartphone has the width of a text column in a newspaper. If the size of a text field in a paper edition of The New York Times is not enough for you, then you can also complain about a mobile phone. »»»
Analytics – another reason to self-publish at Feedbooks
I’m a big fan of Feedbooks, both as an author and reader. Analytics, a newly added feature, proves that for a self-publisher this service is a great landing page to bring new readers – and an ever improving way to learn who they are.
There are self-publishing sites which offer statistics of a book (f.e. Smashwords), but this one sets a completely new standard in how much info you can get from the facts accompanying book download.
Five sections collect data by:

:. formats - a list of formats in which a book was downloaded

:. favourites – users who favoured a book

Poradniki są zbiorem artykułów, które wcześniej publikowałem na blogu, a które zdążyły przepaść w jego otchłaniach. Mam wrażenie, że zainteresowanie niezależnym publikowaniem e-książek będzie rosło z biegiem czasu (i trudno nawet powiedzieć w jakim tempie), dlatego nadanie materiałowi formy książkowej pozwoli na łatwiejsze jego odnalezienie. Jest to jedna z kolejnych zalet publikowania książek w formie elektronicznej.

Kilka dni temu Apple umieścił w Internecie serię filmów prezentujących możliwości swoich programów na iPada. Wśród nich znalazło się również miejsce dla iBooks. Film można obejrzeć tutaj.
Fachowcy z Apple poświęcili mnóstwo czasu i energii, by upodobnić świat nowoczesnej książki do tego, który znamy – papierowego. Podkreślam, wydali całą masę pieniędzy, żebyśmy mogli w czytaniu na iPadzie odnaleźć zalety czynności zupełnie pobocznych, związanych nie z treścią książki, ale jej papierową formą. Bien conocido de la comunidad de lectura Wattpad está plenamente movilizada. Mobile phone is a music and video player, gaming console or a mobile office, so why not an e-book reader? I’m not talking about one-time chase for a lost symbol. I’m talking about 15-minute read in a found time.
If just a tiny 1% of all new touchscreen users will think of reading a book, it’s 1,84m people who might need some hints. And it’s not only touchscreens which can be used as e-readers.

My mother tongue is Polish. Beautiful, rich, melodious language. On the other side I don’t think I’ll ever feel good enough to write stories in English. But web 2.0 opens so many doors for a writer, that I decided to spend some money on a professional English translation of my stories. This was after I discovered Feedbooks and all the great things an author can benefit from. So now I have two versions of the same book – in Polish and in English.
