Kindle, eClicto, Sony, Cool-er, Nook – który wybrać? [3]

Sporo czasu minęło od poprzedniego artykułu. Ale też sporo wydarzyło się na rynku czytników, co doprowadziło to zasadniczej zmiany moich oczekiwań. Niektórzy wiedzą już z Twittera, na które urządzenie się zdecydowałem. Nie jest to żadne z wymienionych powyżej. Może niejeden na moim miejscu udawałby, że ciągle jest zainteresowany eClicto albo Nookiem i napisał jeszcze dwa zaplanowane artykuły w serii, żeby tylko zwiększyć liczbę odwiedzin. Ja tak nie umiem.

Zamiast udawać, wolę opisać krok po kroku, co, w jakim czasie i dlaczego wpłynęło na wybór. Na swoim przykładzie chcę pokazać, jak szybko zmienia się sytuacja na rynku e-czytników – i jaki ma wpływ na decyzje zakupowe. Tym bardziej, że starzeją się nie tylko urządzenia, ale i modele dystrybucji treści. »»»

EClicto e-book platform launched in Poland [analysis]

EClicto, a long awaited Polish e-book platform was officially launched on 10th of December. The company behind it is Kolporter Info SA, already running an online store with a large catalog of paper books.

The platform includes an e-bookstore and a dedicated e-reading device supporting ePub format. It’s a rebranded Netronix’s EB600 model (same as Cool-er or eSlick) with a Linux-based software written from scratch. Copyrighted content is DRM-ed with a proprietary ePub format.

E-reader’s launch price is 899PLN (approximately 312USD or 215EUR). It’s claimed to be the cheapest e-reading device available in Poland and it’s true. International Kindle with custom duty and shipping costs is an expenditure of at least 350USD. The e-reader starting pack includes 100 free books, including bestsellers. Dzisiaj o formatach. Z punktu widzenia czytelnika, który najzwyczajniej w świecie chce dla siebie wybrać metodę czytania i pozyskiwania książek, to bardzo ważny temat – jeśli na serio bierze się pod uwagę stworzenie biblioteki e-książek. Wiem, że dla wielu ludzi możliwość umieszczenia w pamięci czytnika tysiąca książek jest czystą abstrakcją, ale przykład muzyki powinien pozwolić nam się szybciej oswoić z nieznośną niefizycznością e-książek i łatwiej zastąpić w naszych umysłach miejsce na półce miejscem na dysku.

Z formatami e-książek jest tak, że właśnie trwa walka między dwoma najważniejszymi z nich: ePub i mobi. Pod wieloma względami walka przypomina batalię między BlueRay i HD DVD – ścierają się interesy, sytuacja zmienia się z godziny na godzinę, a konsument jest coraz bardziej zdezorientowany, więc czeka na wynik. Wynik ten, przynajmniej dla mnie, już teraz jest przesądzony. »»»

Cool-er jest lepszym wzorem dla eClicto niż Kindle

Wczoraj ruszył oficjalny blog eClicto. Wielu entuzjastów e-booków czekało na ten moment z niecierpliwością. Mimo, że e-księgarnia (a więc sprzedaż) rusza w grudniu, to już sam blog może pomóc zorientować się, w jakim kierunku projekt będzie się rozwijał.

A blog jest cudownie poprawny. Wyważony, spokojny, przemyślany. Gdy tak oglądałem strony, czytałem wpisy, coś mi zaczęło przeszkadzać. Jak to, najbardziej przełomowy projekt na polskim rynku książki, a tu blog o książkach, jak gdyby nigdy nic?

Gdy dowiedziałem się o eClicto i napisałem na ten temat post dla anglojęzycznych czytelników bloga, wywołał on bardzo duże zainteresowanie. Artykuł był cytowany wielokrotnie i do dzisiaj jest jednym z najczęściej odwiedzanych. Dlaczego? Dlatego, że eClicto to jeden z pierwszych takich projektów na świecie. Naprawdę nie ma powodów, by w związku z tym zachowywać się z przesadną skromnością. Powinno czuć się energię i entuzjazm. Ale na blogu póki co tego nie ma. Póki co jest Kindle. Trzeba dodać Cool-era. »»»

Tak już długo piszę o książkach elektronicznych, że w końcu dojrzałem do tego, by kupić urządzenie przeznaczone do ich czytania. Pomyślałem, że fajnie będzie podzielić się wrażeniami  i wiedzą zdobytą w trakcie poszukiwań. Dlatego ruszam z cyklem artykułów na ten temat. Ostatni wpis ukaże się na parę dni po kupieniu urządzenia, czyli w czasie pojawienia się kryzysu pozakupowego. Wszystko po to, by czytelnicy mogli wyrobić sobie własną opinię – na podstawie błędów jakie, co bardzo prawdopodobne, mi się przytrafią. Nie będę spieszył się z wyborem. Nie chcę postępować pochopnie, a decyzja łatwa nie będzie. Tym bardziej, że samo urządzenie wcale nie jest najważniejsze. »»»

How is the e-book world looking right now?

This is a first attempt I’ve ever seen to make a map out of the e-book universe. At a first glance it looks complicated – and it’s the best way to describe what are e-books right now. They’re not niche any more. They break into mainstream. They lure big names.

Sure, there are weak pointe here. I’m missing content providers, for example. You can find many more. On the other hand it would be too complicated to put everything into a single map. And we have to realize, that in a couple of months it will be even more complex. Too complex to vizualize it.

So look at this carefully. Study it. Take your time. This is a first and maybe the last map of e-book world you look at.

eClicto – first Polish e-reader will be launched this autumn

Three weeks ago I attended a Warsaw Bookcamp, where all the participants were particularly interested in a presentation of eClicto, a Polish e-publishing platform, which is about to be launched in autumn. The business model includes an e-reading device, e-bookstore, news portal and a support centre. Comparison to Kindle is inevitable and obviously everybody gets excited with a device itself. It has 6-inch E Ink Vizplex screen with 4 grey levels, 600×800 px, 166 dpi. Internal 512MB memory can be extended with an SD card by up to 4GB. It will support epub, ecl, pdf and txt files.

One can say, it’s nothing new. Just recently Cool-er and Elonex were introduced to support similar sales models. But for me eClicto is one of first examples of bringing e-publishing from international (English) to national (non-English) level. Two Cool-er reviews: which one is cooler? [video]

New eReading devices are crowding into the e-book world. Just a couple of days ago Borders UK have announced their Elonex. The thing is that Elonex is a step backwards comparing to the eReader which is on my mind since I first saw it – Cool-er. Even without a clear (and actually unnecessary) suggestion from a name, this single device can change the way we look at reading – from a boring and old-fashioned habit to a new way of showing your lifestyle.

Is reading a part of a lifestyle? – you’re asking. For me – yes. Just as mp3s are not only about listening to music or cell phones not only about calling. It’s great that somebody wants to bring coolness to reading. And as we, consumers, are asked to verify the coolness of a device, it’s good to look at what professionals want us to say about it, before we make our own mind. To make you curious I can only say, that those two films are totally different in evaluation of the device. »»»

How fast will prices of e-readers go down?

This is obvious that prices of e-readers will constantly go down. Just recently two new devices were launched: Cool-er from Interead and Elonex (in association with Borders UK). They are both competitively priced, $249 and $311 respectively. Although they are designed to be access points to their own e-bookstores, it’s no coincidence that Amazon has reduced overnight the price of the ugliest-ereader-ever – Kindle 1 – from $295 to $240. That was fast.

And this is the most exciting question: how much will prices of e-readers go down by the end of 2009? To make guessing simpler, I’ve collected in a beautiful widget a basket of 12 most popular e-readers available at Amazon. The total cost is not beautiful at all – on 30th of June it was $5205,71, what makes an average of $433,80.

The purpose of this post is not to give you a professional speech on the future of e-readers, but to make you excited about them (at least as much as I am). So no talking, just have fun and guess. Having a basket as a reference, please mark your vote. »»»
