]]> Last year, in June, I was stunned with a little discovery: Wolfram Alpha interpreted ebook as an African language.

Since that time I was frequently checking how a most advanced self-learning tool on earth is coping with electronic books. Today I’ve been putting many words: e-book, eBook, e-books, eBooks, etc. The results are still not clear. Generally Wolfram Alpha is assuming this is a book. Worst answer comes for “eBook”, it says:

Wolfram Alpha doesn’t know how to interpret your input.

It’s a shame, especially that Wolfram Alpha is having a special program helping to integrate computational knowledge into electronic publications. One of the most advanced e-books ever made, The Elements for iPad, is based on that. Or maybe I should say: one of the most advanced “Wolfram Alpha doesn’t know how to interpret your input” things ever made.

As I started a new project involving my brain and all the technology available around, I owe you a couple of lines of explanation.

I have a constant emotional desire to write about technology and its influence on us, humans. Several thoughts are collected in this frequently updated post, but I wanted to highlight the best ones by giving them a new dimension. An idea of processing them through a text-to-speech synthesizer seemed to be a fantastic tool. By using it you bring all the absurdity of a human vs. technology relation as it can be described as:

A thought on technology created in human’s brain being delivered by a technology itself.

There was one big “but”. The technology is advancing. When I was playing with Ivona synthesizer a couple of months ago, there was absolutely no doubt it was a text-to-speech tool. But when I started to play with technologically processed thoughts a month ago – this was a different story. The tool sounds almost like a human. I actually had to play a lot to make sure the “technology sounds well”. It inspired me to cheat Ivona with some creativity. Just check the example below.

New thoughts will be published every month on Posterous and autoposted to many places on the web, this blog among them.

Memo do siebie: spisz wszystko, to dobry materiał na opowiadanie. I tym razem nie zmieniaj nazw, przecież oparte będzie na faktach.

16 marca zamówiłem w sklepie internetowym Vobis baterię do laptopa. Wybrałem firmę znaną (choć nie wiem, czy cenioną) z prostego względu – mam bardzo złe doświadczenia z tanimi sklepikami internetowymi typu Ulubiony.pl. W sklepiku tym zdarzyło mi się zamówić drobnostkę płatną z góry i czekałem na nią dobrych parę tygodni, a po drugiej stronie cisza zupełna, jakby z komputera wyjęli wiatrak. Wynikało to z prostego powodu – ludzie nie byli sobie w stanie poradzić z nawałem zamówień, więc olewali te pomniejsze.

Sam już nie wiem, co jest lepsze, bo w Vobisie z kolei same roboty. Jako potwierdzenie złożenia zamówienia otrzymałem maila, w którym zamiast zwyczajowej formułki pożegnalnej widniała nowa zwyczajowa formułka pożegnalna:

Wiadomość wygenerowana automatycznie, prosimy nie odpowiadać.
Vobis Digital

Co ciekawe mail został przysłany z konta, któremu przypisano imię i nazwisko. Pojawił się suspens jak u Hitchcocka – człowiek to czy maszyna maile te wysyła? A maili było dużo, bo okazało się, że dyskrybutor przysłał im nie tę baterię co potrzeba. Tak przynajmniej napisał mi robot, tylko skąd on to wiedział. Zamiast planowanego terminu dostawy, 22 marca, musiałem czekać do wczoraj.

A jak już przyszedł mail, że przesyłka jest gotowa do odbioru, to rzuciłem wszystko i grzecznie pojechałem do salonu, bo taką jak się później okazało, wymyśliłem sobie pokutę. Pokuta polegała na tym, że kurier dostarczył uszkodzoną baterię. Opakowanie było zniszczone, bateria wygięta od uderzenia, a pan nie za bardzo wiedział jak się zachować, więc kazał mi samemu odkręcać sprawę. Powiedział:

- Ja ich znam tak samo jak pan. Ja nic nie wiem, my i oni to są inni ludzie.

- Ale z kim jak mam rozmawiać, tam są same roboty.

- To ja już nie wiem.

Rozmowa z automatem mailowym przynosi w sumie takie same efekty, jak z człowiekiem, który nie chce ponosić odpowiedzialności. Czterysta złotych spoczywa na koncie firmy Vobis, tylko jak to do cholery dać im znać, że sprawa wymknęła się im spod kontroli i być może nie mają takiej sytuacji przewidzianej w algorytmie, którym żywią swoje mailowe boty?

No nic, napisałem wyjaśnienie pod adres mailowy, z którego szła cała korespondencja. Po chwili dostałem odpowiedź, ale z konta “unknown sender”:

W dniach 3-10.04 przebywam na urlopie. Wszelkie sprawy w czasie mojej nieobecności proszę kierować na adres… (i tu adres z imieniem i nazwiskiem)

Do tej pory nie dostałem odpowiedzi od pana sąsiadującego z panią, która była/udawała robota do wczoraj. Warianty są dwa:

- jeśli jest robotem, nie wie, jak zareagować

- jeśli jest człowiekiem, nie będzie chciał zareagować i odłoży sprawę do powrotu robota z urlopu.

Macie jakąś radę dla człowieka, który traci nerwy?
