Sophisticated things smart people say about other people – everybody loves it. But what if such things were said from a totally different perspective?

Nowadays technology is able to analyze, think, judge, choose and response. What was a part of science fiction world now starts to leak into reality. It’s high time to realize that soon humans will not be the only beings to think independently.

That’s why another project I’ll be constantly developing is Tech Quotes. It’s fascinating to switch a perspective and see ourselves from a point of view of technology: robots, gadgets, scripts, computer parts or pieces of code. It would be a fantastic way to show that we humans are not the only ones to be right and own truth.

The project has two variants. All ideas will be shared on Twitter with a #techquotes hashtag from my main profile (@namenick) as well as @mobilefiction – that one is devoted to share fictional pieces only. Check also Password Incorrect Facebook page for updates.

Robot proverbs and other quotes

Let’s get used to the fact that we are developing our successors. What would they say about us? Read a couple of examples below.

The most dangerous thing about humans is that they are so irrational.

–Robot Proverb

Man’s microprocessor is called “brain” and it’s an awful waste of space.

–Intel Microprocessor

Humans are stupid. It took them thousands of years to evolve from their predecessors and only a couple of years to create their successors.

–Robot Proverb

Want to delete something? Start from yourself.

–Unknown File

Another idea is trickier.

Technologically processed thoughts on technology

I’ve processed my thoughts on a human-technology relation with a technology itself, using Ivona text-to-speech generator. The results are interesting. When listening to quotes you have a feeling that a human’s thought is interpreted by technology. You’ll find more details in this post. Listen to most interesting examples right now:

One sentence conclusion: the purpose of tech quotes is not to be loved by humans, but to warn humans.

A paragraph of a story Google-translated from Polish - and ready for back-translation

Both iPhone and hashtag stories are much better known than this literary experiment. I’ve been trying to use Google Translate a few times before, including Google-translated Day, but the feeling I always had was that it’s not there yet.

But now I’m fully convinced I’m doing the right thing. What’s more important: it’s not too early for that. Why? Because with a current stage of development Google Translate is able to convey more information than a man who doesn’t listen.

What is it?

The shortest description:

Flash-fiction stories written in such a way, that they can be translated by Google with a smallest number of mistakes.

I’ve changed the approach completely: now I’m helping Google to translate. Before it was just: “look how technology is devastating human’s work”.

The project is called “What they say” and lives at its own site. What I’d like to stress is that there is an idea behind the stories – in order to build a proper, meaningful context for Google Translate being used on purpose.

So what are the stories about? The lack of communication between people. Or to be more precise: the nonsense of it, as a result of different reasons: envy, vanity, money, bribe and other ones you are not willing to loudly share with the others.

The main character is Adam Labble (yes, anagram of “Babel”), an average internet addict, who has one unusual skill. He is able to find nonsense in communication and solve the issue.

He takes quick assignments in different places around the world. The stories written so far take place in Poland, USA, Egypt and Russia. Google Translate can help read them in any of the languages supported by Google.

How are the stories created?

I write a story in Polish. Then, sentence by sentence or paragraph by paragraph I translate it to English with an online Google Translate tool. When there is a need to correct mistakes I rewrite the text. If I fail, I write again or even change a plot completely.

If a Google-made back-translation, from English to Polish, is acceptable, the story goes online.

Every story is accompanied by a Google Map area where it could possibly happen.

What’s the message?

It’s what drives my imagination: how technology is influencing human’s behavior, attitude, thinking, creativity. But there’s more to it than that.

It’s a project designed to test the usefulness of technology in a creative process. Another thing is that no matter how good is the technology at disposal, if people don’t want to understand each other, they won’t understand each other.

There is also one interesting area from a point of view of creators (human+technology). For the time being the human is lowering the skills to the level of a technology. I’m afraid it may change. One year ago Google-translated texts were not acceptable, six months ago – not good, now – not bad.

Why am I doing it?

There are a couple of good reasons. The most important one is a simple conclusion, that Internet and technology are dismantling barriers between people, especially geographic and language ones. Why not helping it a bit?

The other reason is my obsession to embrace technology in order to create. “If the technology can make you ahead of the others, use it” – it’s my motto, well seen also in iPhone-made stories.

Last thing, very important. English is not my mother tongue (you feel it, right?). No English author would come up with such an idea as Google-translated fiction. Let the rest of the world translate what they want, he may think. And that’s exactly where he’s loosing. Because no longer you have to be an established American author to be read in Indonesia or Chile. You can be a guy from Poland or Italy or Egypt. The only thing you have to do is to properly use the technology which is available for free.

What is the timeline?

Let me repeat: it’s not too early for such projects. Google Translate is widely used, also by writers, not only to understand, but also to let others understand. A famous example is Paulo Coelho’s blog, where Google translate widget is used.

I think creative people can, and should, go further. Especially that in a predictable timeframe the quality of such tools like Google Translate will improve to a level, that people and institutions will use them officially.

It’s a question of a few years, maybe even months, when Google Translate will become one of the options different apps will have. And the apps I’m talking about are RSS readers and ebook readers.

The timeline for “What they say” is to write 10-20 stories a year and observe how the quality of both of us improves. I’m sure that when I’ll be ready to publish an e-book, translating options will be already available in the e-reading applications.

Imagine: a story written in order to make it easy for Google to translate it into any language. One book which at the launch date is available in more than 50 languages? Worth trying.

I only worry that I should really hurry up.

Tytuł projektu: Co oni mówią/What they say.

I jeszcze jedno.

One picture stories are extremely easy to create. Just shoot a picture and type your story using TypeDrawing application. This post is to share with you some tips on how to achieve a more advanced look. If you know what you want, it’ll take no more than 20 minutes.

When you have an iPhone 3G the pictures are, to be polite, average. This one was shot at the Spectrum Museum in Berlin. I knew I had to deeply rework it.

I started with RetroCamera (AppStore link). This is a great app which lets you play with cool vintage effects. First I added a texture.

Then I selected a frame effect, which made a picture more magical, and saved work to photo gallery.

Next step. I opened a PhotoForge application (AppStore link), increased contrast and saturation and played a bit with hue. At this point I was satisfied with a visual effect and saved a picture to photo gallery.

Last step – drawing words with TypeDrawing (AppStore link). A piece of advice: the font size doesn’t have to be big. Just make sure it’s readable. Paint words in such areas and in such a way, so they can correspond with a picture – or bring a new meaning to it.

I’m sending ready-made pictures from an iPhone to my profile at Posterous via PicPosterous (AppStore link). They are automatically reposted to many networks including Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook and Flickr (a full list is here).

Was it helpful and inspiring? Take an iPhone, shoot a photo and think of a story. Or think of a story and find a good picture for it. And remember – you can share it with the others in a couple of minutes.

If you own an iPhone and want to share with the world more than just pictures, try this: one picture stories.

They’re extremely easy to create – and fun to do. What you need is one great application from the AppStore – Type Drawing. The app is definitely worth its price – 1,99 USD/1,59 EUR (download link here). The program lets you literally paint with words. The recent update has an enhanced, intuitive interface; a choice of 22 fonts, ability to zoom, eyedropper and many other features.

What’s most important – as a background you can use pictures from your iPhone’s photo library.

How to create one picture story?

1. Pick up a photo.

2. Open it in Type Drawing.

3. Write/paint your text. Do it the way you want, it’s all up to your imagination. A useful tip here is that if you don’t want a text to be painted in a loop just enter several spaces at the end in a text input box.

4. Save picture to photo library.

5. Share with the world. If you use a tag #1picstory it’ll be easier found in the Twitterverse.

Extra tip: If you want to improve your picture before you edit a text, you can use apps like PhotoForge or RetroCamera. I’m planning to write a post on those tools as well, so stay tuned.

After creating almost 50 stories I can tell one thing – it’s true that we are a visual civilisation and that what we see is more appealing to us than what we read. The picture stories I’ve created were much more often seen, retweeted, favoured and commented than my Twitter fiction pieces.

To put things short: one picture stories are more attractive than sheer words and more meaningful than sheer photos.

What do you think? Does it sound like a fun? Will you play with it? Share your opinion! And if you’ve found one picture stories worth a try, please share this post with your friends.

It’s almost a year since I started hashtagstories – microstories written with current Twitter hashtags.

Sorry? Stories written with what? A year ago this was weird even to me. But it was just so inspiring to combine the world of hashtags into a piece of a literary fiction that I gave it a try. I also wanted to use it as a way to enter English writing. It was looking like a pretty easy job to do – just collect meaningful, emotional hashtags and scrabble them into a story.

After a year I can tell you – hashtagstories are not easy. They are a hard work. I had to go through many Twitter-based services to find the best source of hashtag info. Previously I was using Hashtags.org, now it’s What the Trend.

There are spam hashtags. There are misleading hashtags. There are secret abbreviations. I always have to be very careful to avoid using a wrong word. And the wrong word with a tag is a way worse than the wrong word alone.

Like many unusual projects, hashtagstories had big chances to fail. As the primary way to build meaning is the order of words, there is a danger a story can be misinterpreted. It’s hard to decode a story when it’s told with nouns only. I managed to write only few stories, which read as a sentence. One of the best ones is:

#iwish #iseeyou #inmyhood #beforethestorm

I have a warm feeling that I’ll stay with #hashtagstory for a long time. It’ll not be a day-to-day love. It’ll happen in bursts. But it’s good to write them. When I was publishing a book at Feedbooks, Hashtagstories Vol. 1, I’ve worked out a good, decent description of what the stories are: a literary memoir of social media trends.

Yes, this is what they are. It’ll take some time to find in them the emotions of the past. It’s not gonna take too much time, though. Social media life is changing so fast.

Last thing, I’m happy to share with you, that Hashtagstories Vol. 1, has crossed 1,000 downloads. Thank you all for showing interest and sharing #hashtagstory with your Twitter friends.

Second volume is coming soon.

Today @wembley shared a great link.

When you go to a Twitter profile of @420watch, you’ll see in a sidebar an awesome visual art made from animated avatars. The idea is brilliant, as well as execution. One of those ideas answering a question “what else can we do with the old good Twitter”. One of those inspirational ideas which make you think, until you come up with something new.

And here it is: an #avatarstory. A story from animated avatars. Each avatar is one letter. The letters can appear in a speed and order, which are best to tell a story. We’ve got 36 characters. It’s an average length of a #6wordstory.

I imagine to have one account, let’s say @avatarstory, which follows 36 other accounts created specifically for this purpose. A new story could come every weekend. It’s not as easy as tweeting it, you have to change 36 avatars, but it’s definitely much more interesting.

Wow, I got excited… but I know it’s much beyond my tech skills. I’ll try to contact @420watch tweeps with a decent proposal. If you feel the energy and want to co-create and develop a story with me, just send a DM or mail me. Two of us can make this thing happen!

And God bless all the folks behind tile avatar Twitter art.
