]]> It’s just an idea, but it’s doable: a book application which has parallel narration paths and narration styles. When you open it, you select your mood and what follows is a plot path which best fits into how you feel (and what you expect from a book).

So if you want to calm down, you have the same story delivered in a much more descriptive way. If you want more action, you get a thicker plot.

When reading e-books, you have them all on one device. You read several books at the same time. You pick up the right one to answer your current emotional need (match your mood).

Why choose from many books if your need can be answered by a single one?

These are the brand new covers, I’ve designed with a help of my Twitter friends for two volumes of my short stories, which will be available in a couple of weeks through Smashwords/Barnes&Noble. In the meantime you can download a free edition here. I describe the stories as tech-absurd. The bot-behaving gadget-eating error-ready part of you will understand, what I mean.

The brief I issued to myself was simple: get an attention of geeks with a message: “technology is wonderful, but…” (oh, and check the bottom bar for options).

]]> Po wycieku haseł z Wykopu doszedłem do wniosku, że jest to niespecjalny serwis o wyglądzie i działaniu kija bejsbolowego, a dzisiejsza bezskuteczna próba usunięcia konta – że jest to serwis żenujący. Moją wyobraźnię uruchamiają ludzie, którym się wydaje, że mogą wszystko. A administratorom Wykopu tak się musi wydawać i w związku z tym wprowadzają do polskiego Internetu reguły stalinopochodne.

Opowiadanie zasnute wykopową frustracją poniżej:

Szymon szedł właśnie na przystanek, gdy zobaczył na wielkim telebimie swoją nazwę i hasło z serwisu Dokop.pl. Zamurowało go. Szybko sprawdził wiadomości. Okazało się, że po pięciu miesiącach po kradzieży haseł z Dokopu hakerzy nie otrzymali żądanego okupu, czyli kredytu na zakup nowego serwera. W akcie zemsty postanowili upublicznić hasła. Atak był zmasowany i odbył się jednocześnie w wielu miejscach w kraju. Dopiero wtedy administratorzy Dokopu podali oficjalną informację na temat wycieku. Za powód opóźnienia podali “troskę o bezpieczeństwo danych osobowych”.

Szymon postanowił ratować co się da. Miał konta w 65 serwisach – i wszędzie to samo hasło. Czym prędzej pognał do domu. Po wejściu na swoje konto, dowiedział się, że “Trwają pracę nad tym, by twój profil wyglądał jeszcze bardziej ziomalsko. Wróć za jakiś czas.” Zdenerwował się. Chciał usunąć profil, ale żeby to zrobić musiał udać się do centrali z pismem poświadczonym przez notariusza w towarzystwie “poręczyciela tożsamości internetowej”. Wziął brata, polecieli przez notariusza do centrali, a tu tłum ludzi i wszyscy wymachują papierami. Co z tego, jak centrala pojechała na szkolenie “Bezpieczeństwo danych osobowych w kontekście bezprawnego wykradania danych przez cwaniaków powiązanych z poprzednim zarządem Dokop.pl”.

W całkowitej desperacji Szymon wrócił do domu i zaczął wymieniać hasła we wszystkich serwisach. Gdy nad ranem wreszcie skończył, dostał maila o treści:

Hejka, szymon12345

Tak tylko piszę, że znam twoje nowe hasło, a brzmi ono szymon54321. Głupawe, nie powiem. Słuchaj, jakbyś chciał się dołożyć do serwerka (potrzebne 450 zeta), to daj znać, razem dowalimy Dokopowi:-)))))

Aha, wychodzę na bimbrezkę, to się spiknij przed wieczorem, bo od jutra rana lecisz z nowym passem na Centralnym.

Referring to this post, I just started to collect ideas of what can be done to support e-book cover design, with “e-book” being the most important part. We should stop thinking of e-books as a second class, second step or a second chance. We should stop thinking of  CMYK, Pantone colors and the shade of a paper. Let’s think of a cover design for an e-book in terms of where it’s gonna be exposed. And it will not appear on a bookshelf. The destination of an e-book cover is a screenshelf.

As soon as we change our perspective, some amazing ideas start to crowd into mind. This single example of a cover, designed to be an e-book cover and nothing else, is benefiting from two possibilities, which are not so easy to be achieved with p-book covers:

Bright colors :. Every designer will admit, that it’s not easy to keep bright colors when it comes to printing. “An intensive green?–You need a Pantone color for that.” Now think – you don’t have this problem any more. Use the most of RGB scale, you’re not gonna loose it.

Transparency :. When you download a file to a place where an e-book will be shown, you can keep the transparency if you use a .png format. Transparency has a tremendous potential and it can start a totally new way of looking at book covers at all. I remember how impressed I was, when I downloaded Adrian Graham’s book to Stanza and it had round corners! So imagine a cover which is not limited, like in case of p-books, to what can be cut out of paper. Use just letters for a cover, make it round, take an impressive drawing and show it without a background, se a couple of layers, each one with a different transparency. And lots more.

The time is high to change attitude, as at least two major things are going to shape new expectations towards e-book covers:
:. It’s only a question of time when new color E-Ink devices will arrive
:. Apple will soon enter an e-book world with at least one eReading device – and totally change the way we think of e-books. The look is gonna be very important, as always with Apple, this time the look of an e-book.

Mike Cane wrote a great post, comparing p- and e- covers of the same book. I agree – e-books are eToilet. But it’s gonna change and the innovation will come from those, who treat e-books like a first class, first step and a first chance.

]]> Wczoraj w serwisie branżowym przeczytałem informację, że jedna z agencji reklamowych upraszcza strukturę i w związku z tym powstaje nowe stanowisko. Rozbawiło mnie to serdecznie i przypomniało o czasach, gdy sam byłem częścią takiej dziwnie rozbudowywanej struktury, w której gubiły się wszelkie kompetencje. Czyli temat do wskrzeszenia, w nowym wcieleniu, ze wskazaniem na tytułologię:

Zarząd uroczyście ogłosił, że struktura firmy ma być demokratycznie spłaszczona, w związku z tym zlikwidowano jedno stanowisko średniego szczebla oraz powstało dwanaście nowych stanowisk szczebla… no właśnie, nie wiadomo jakiego. Niektórzy pracownicy doskonale czuli się w takiej luźno pojmowanej strukturze. Przodował w tym Mareczek, oficjalnie mianowany na stanowisko “junior supervising executive deputy manager”. Jak nie chciał brać za coś odpowiedzialności, to mówił, że jest junior, a jak chciał zlecić Igorowi pracę, to mówił, że jest deputy.

Igor nie angażował się w korporacyjne rozgrywki, tylko robił swoje, ale tym razem postanowił zareagować i porozmawiać z szefem nowo utworzonej struktury, do której prawdopodobnie należał (na 75%). Szef powiedział, że on nic nie może, ale z tego co wie, to Mareczek jest od wczoraj na innym stanowisku (“deputy executive team leading junior director”), więc sprawa rozwiązała się sama.

]]> Prosta historia urodzona na skrzyżowaniu oraz po przeczytaniu informacji o tym, że pewien człowiek został potrącony przez samochód, którym jednocześnie jechał.

Gerard przejechał terenówką siebie samego na skrzyżowaniu. Jako pieszy złamał sobie nogę. Postanowił walczyć o odszkodowanie. Wystąpił do sądu z pozwem na siebie samego. Żeby było ciekawiej oskarżycielem i adwokatem byli bracia bliźniacy.  Gerard doszedł do wniosku, że jakby nie patrzeć, zawsze na rozprawie zarobi, a jak nie na tej, to na kolejnej, w której też pozwie siebie samego, ale jako poszkodowany kierowca, który przecież złamał sobie nogę z winy pieszego.

]]> Wygrana polskiej reprezentacji z San Marino zafrapowała mnie z dwóch powodów. Po pierwsze, jak sobie dają radę piłkarze San Marino, gdy dostają w każdym meczu i to wysoko. Po drugie, jak sobie dadzą radę polscy piłkarze z, jak to nazywam, “nieuzasadnioną megalomanią”. Prawda jest taka, że nie wygrali z dobrą drużyną, ale prawda jest też taka, że wygrali wysoko. Podejrzewam, że w ocenie swoich osiągnięć będą trzymali się tego drugiego.

Reprezentacja polskiego futbolu sieciowego wygrała mecz na wyjazdowym IP z drużyną bloga o rozwoju kanarków w warunkach zastraszania przez domowników płci męskiej. Wysoka wygrana (34:12) przyciągnęła do drużyny nowego wielkiego sponsora: firmę od paneli podłogowych z lokalnego serwera. Zawodnicy dostali nowe koszulki ze zdjęciem panelu olcha/dąb oraz po batonie energetycznym i w chwilę później zaczęli marzyć o wielkiej karierze na adresach IP klubów sieciowych z Barcelony i Mediolanu.

Najbliższy realizacji marzenia był Olo, który wysłał maila i dostał automatyczną odpowiedź. W efekcie postanowił obrazić się na prezesa i odejść tak czy inaczej, bo nie będzie się marnował. A jak do baru “Pod Gęsiną” odszedł najlepszy lewostronny joystick, to cała linia środka rozsypała się po adresach IP w okolicy, występując w roli gwiazd światowego futbolu sieciowego. Oczywiście doszło do rozpadu drużyny. Zawodnicy w pamięci korygowali dane z meczu.
