Google-translated fiction v.1.09

It’s been eight long months since I started a litexperimental project called Google-translated fiction. A simple description is: letting technology, in this case GT Beta, influence the final effect of human’s writing. Major reason I’m running this project is to establish a presence of technological tools in literature in order to eliminate language limitations. Sounds academic, a better explanation would be: an idea to access international audience by a non-English writer.

Below I’m comparing two Google-translations of a single short story. The story in its original Polish version is fixed, but it’s improving at a pace of Google Translate. I must say that recently there has been a substantial development. Probably it happened at the time new languages were added to the service. That’s why a current version of GT-fiction is 1.09, not 1.0009.

I’ll make frequent updates to this 1GT-ed story, as this is showing another dimension of digital literature: it can change (hopefully improve) without the participation of an author. A literary text is no longer ultimate. It’s dynamic, flowing and unpredictable. With my passion to tech-absurd–it’s technology which is improving it or killing it. »»»

A book promotion running until year 2109

A hundred-year-long book promotion. Is it a joke? Definitely not. I’m serious about it. As serious as a tech-absurd writer can be. It’s possible, it takes half an hour and it makes you feel really great. Look at the screenshot below:

When did I do it? Before lunch. How did I do it? I’ve scheduled one hundred tweets (yes, one tweet a year) with a link to Password Incorrect, my mobilefiction book available for free from Feedbooks. There are a couple of Twitter apps you can use for that, like CoTweet or TweetLater. My choice was Hootsuite.

Now, the most important question: why did I do it? There are several reasons, you just need to skip this distracting thought at the back of your head, saying “all that doesn’t make sense at all”. »»»

Milion książek w formacie ePub od Google Books. I co? I nic

Dzisiaj na oficjalnym blogu Google Books ukazała się fantastyczna  informacja – ponad milion książek z domeny publicznej udostępnionych już jest w formacie ePub. Wiadomość fantastyczna, bo ePub to format stworzony na urządzenia mobilne, a przecież na nich już za parę lat będziemy głównie czytać książki.

Ze dzikim spojrzeniem woodstokowicza rzuciłem się na iPhone’a sprawdzić, jak czują się ePuby w mobilnej wersji Google Books. Chciałem sprawdzić, czy książki można ściągać z mobilnej przeglądarki i otwierać w Stanzie. Miałem również nadzieję dotrzeć do polskich książek w ePubie. I już teraz mogę bez żenady napisać: wiadomość jest fantastyczna, ale tylko teoretycznie. Szczerze mówiąc, jestem dramatycznie zawiedzony. Powody:

Nie ma opcji ściągania książek w wersji mobilnej :. Dalej jest tak, jak było wtedy, gdy pisałem ten artykuł – w wersji mobilnej serwisu, dostępnej pod adresem http://books.google.com/m można jedynie czytać książki on-line, nie można ich ściągnąć nie tylko w ePub, ale w żadnym innym formacie. Fakt, że milion książek dostępnych jest w formacie na urządzenia mobilne nie oznacza więc kompletnie nic. »»»

Possibilities of e-book cover design [example]

Look at the example of a cover I recently made for my new book.

Referring to this post, I just started to collect ideas of what can be done to support e-book cover design, with “e-book” being the most important part. We should stop thinking of e-books as a second class, second step or a second chance. We should stop thinking of  CMYK, Pantone colors and the shade of a paper. Let’s think of a cover design for an e-book in terms of where it’s gonna be exposed. And it will not appear on a bookshelf. The destination of an e-book cover is a screenshelf.

As soon as we change our perspective, some amazing ideas start to crowd into mind. This single example of a cover, designed to be an e-book cover and nothing else, is benefiting from two possibilities, which are not so easy to be achieved with p-book covers: »»»

Prezes wzrokiem miłujący [opowiadanie]

Czasy są niespecjalne, druga fala kryzysu się zbliża, a wraz z nią zwolnienia połączona z grupową nienawiścią do różnych prezesów. Dobrze się w takich czasach odnajdują moje opowiadania, pisane w większości wtedy, gdy sam miałem swój prywatny kryzys. W przeciwieństwie do innych, nie szukałem w książkach ucieczki od stresu, ale jego odreagowania. Rozbrajałem swoje życiowe bomby pisząc. Mam nadzieję, że opowiadania takie jak to, pomogą paru ludziom również rozbroić parę bombę.

Prezes wzrokiem miłujący

– Nie lubię cię! – krzyknął prezes i zabił wzrokiem pana Krzysia, swojego osobistego kierowcę, który przyjechał zabrać go po raz pierwszy do nowej firmy, zdaje się Lambda.

Nowy prezes był człowiekiem porywczym i często się denerwował. Nazywał się Wolfenstein Arnold i był wychowany w duchu całkowitej patriotycznej uległości wobec autorytetów. Takiej samej uległości wymagał od swoich pracowników, a kierowca Krzyś nie powiedział „dzień dobry” wystarczająco serdecznie. »»»
